Oral Health

On this page, we present some treated cases at Shadi International dental and orthodontic center – which Dr. Emad Wani has done.

Oral Health

Introduction:
Patients wearing braces need to be very careful when it comes to maintaining braces, teeth and gum clean.
By following the orthodontist’s instructions about the oral health and avoiding certain foods, you will be able to maintain healthy teeth and beautiful smile that lasts forever. Not cleaning your teeth can lead to a bacterial plaque formation, and if left on your teeth around the braces, it can develop into a swollen gum, foul odor (halitosis), discolored and distorted teeth as well as dental cavities.

Flossing with braces on is rather hard; therefore, it will take a few minutes. But don’t give it up, because flossing is very essential for your dental health.

Patients should avoid sticky, hard, and chewable foods. They should also avoid any kinds of foods or drinks known to cause cavities. Patients should regularly brush and floss their teeth, and rinse between meals. The following foods are known to break the orthodontic applicants, and they are an example of what should be avoided:

  • Chewing gum
  • Bacon
  • Sticky or hard candies
  • Corn flakes
  • Crispy taco shells
  • Full apple
  • Celery
  • Nut
  • Caramel
  • Toffy
  • Popcorn
  • Soft drinks
  • Candy figures

When you now have your braces on, brushing your teeth becomes harder. Therefore, you should be very careful to maintain the new braces clean. You should brush your teeth after each main meal or snack correctly. Keep your toothbrush always at your fingertips, you also should brush your teeth in school or at work after lunch. You will also need to change your toothbrush more frequently, because braces will make them wear out faster.

In between toothbrush is especially good in cleaning teeth surfaces beside the braces.

Water jet is an efficient way to remove plaques and deep leftovers between the teeth and around braces. Water jet is taking out a pulsating current of water to remove the remaining food leftovers.

It’s recommended to use mouthwash with the water. Use water jet after the regular teeth brushing and flossing routine.

Call as soon as possible if you broke or dismantle any of your braces parts. You will allow us to give you time in order to meet and fix you your braces.

You can be in a case that requires cutting off a wire or slipping a bracket away from it, at night or during the weekend.
Call our center directly for a consultation if the bracket or the wire broke up. The bracket might need a re-set as soon as possible.

Sometimes the disturbance caused by the braces’ wire can be solved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire didn’t move, try to cover its end with a piece of cotton or a little amount of wax.

If you couldn’t solve the wire irritability problem, please call us for an appointment.

Do not worry about losing a bracket, call our center to see if it needs to be replaced.

During the first week after placing the braces and completing routine adjustments, you are likely to feel some pain or discomfort. Some non-aspirin painkillers can be used until you adapt to the new braces. A damp cloth with warm solution may reduce the pain you feel in your jaw.

Early treatment

When is the best time to start the orthodontic treatment?
There is a golden period to start the treatment, even though orthodontists can give a more beautiful smile at any age. Starting the treatment at the perfect time can guarantee the best result and less time and charge. The American Association of orthodontist recommend that a primary orthodontic assessment should be performed at the first sign of orthodontic problems or pre-7 years. At this early age, the orthodontic problem may not be significant. However, the early examination can expect the most suitable timing to start the treatment.

Early Treatment Related Instruction

Early assessment provides better problem detection and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Early intervention guides growth and development, preventing the serious problems from occurring later on. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can observe the growth and development accurately, and begin treatment when they are ideal.

The first permanent molars erupt at the age of 7, establishing the posterior bite. During this time, the orthodontist can evaluate the relationship between the teeth in three dimensions. For example, the presence of erupted incisors can indicate to overbite, open bite, crowded teeth or gingival smile. A conveniently examination increases the chances of having a charming smile.

Some of the most palpable results of early preventive treatment are:
– Finding space for crowded erupted teeth.
– Create facial symmetry by influencing the growth of the jaw.
– Decrease the risk of anterior Snaggletooth traumas.
– Keep space for non-erupted teeth.
– Decrease the need of tooth extraction.
– Decrease the orthodontic treatment period.

Orthodontic treatment works on improving the smile aesthetics, chewing, functional abilities and speaking.
Orthodontic treatment improves bad bites (malocclusions). Malocclusions occur as a result of jaw or tooth disalignment. Malocclusions effect on the way you smile, chew, brush your teeth or feel your smile.
These cases, showcases before and after treatment in early treated cases.

Orthognathic surgery can correct the erratic positions of the upper and / or lower jaw resulting from undesirable growth.
The purpose of this surgery is to obtain good jaws occlusion (functional) and aesthetic side of the face.

Orthodontic treatment is necessary to Correct teeth, but when the teeth do not fit properly because of structural problems in the growth of the jaws, we should surgically correct that deformity.

Of these problems, severe mandibular or maxillary protrusion or retrognathism. And people with deep or open bite. As well as posterior jaws deformations -harelip-.

The chance of a combination therapy is discussed on the primary consultation, and one more time on treatment planning visit. If surgery was indicated, a consultation appointment is arranged with the oral surgeon who will perform the operation, so you can have answers to all your questions. If you decide to carry on the combination therapy, braces will be fixed and the treatment will take 6-12 months, so that the dental position reach the best result after surgery. During this period, the problem may seems gone worse. However, when the jaws are put in the appropriate alignment through surgery, the teeth will then fit into their proper positions.
Surgery is performed by oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist.
Orthodontic treatment resumes after about 4-3 weeks of surgery, and usually completed within an additional 3-6 months –depending on the case-.
